HAPPY NEW YEAR!
In January, our concepts for the month are: Color-White/Black, Shape-Star and Number-6.
This week, during Jesus Time, the focus will be on Epiphany and the Visit of the Wise Men. The children learned that these men, Magi, followed a star to find Jesus. These men were very smart and they studied the stars; that's why they were called wise men. They traveled from the east by camel. The wanted to worship Jesus and bring him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. I showed the class 3 special tin boxes filled with similar substances. We used our senses to look, smell and touch these gifts. As the week continues we will touch on King Herod and Joseph's dream to flee Bethlehem to Egypt. The words Epiphany, Magi, frankincense and myrrh are fun words to say.
Key Points:
1. Jesus is God's gift to us.
2. He forgives our sins.
3. These men brought gifts to worship Jesus.
4. We go to church to worship and honor him.
The Story: Matt. 2:1-12, Gifts For Baby Jesus
Soon many of the people who came to register in Bethlehem went home. Mary and Joseph moved into a house. One day they had visitors who came from far away in the east. These were wise men. They had followed a star to find the little Jesus. They bowed down and worshiped God's only son and gave him expensive gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. As we ended our Jesus Time the class shared stories about Christmas at their house. We talked about the different presents they gave and received. They all agreed, with a little reminder, that JESUS was their BEST Christmas gift.
The pictures from Monday.
Using brown pudding and a Q-tip, the children painted the camel to remind them of the Wise Men's journey to worship baby Jesus.
The class used a big marshmallow and white paint to make a picture of a snowy day. White is one of our colors for the month.
We matched the stars. This activity reinforced the shape of the month and remind us that the Wise Men studied stars. They followed one special star to the house where Jesus lived.
We colored a door knocker to remind us about giving Jesus our gift of praise and honor as we worship him.
The day concluded with the girls and boys retelling the Christmas story. We were so impressed as they retold they story of Jesus birth. Praise Be to God!
We so enjoyed seeing all the children again. They all made such an easy transition back to PDO. It sounds as if all our families had a wonderful Christmas and break. May God bless all of you in the new year.
